After finishing the last movie project, we were working on a new project called Black Rainbow. During that process it came to mind that we wanted to side-track it, because it was going to be more work than we had expected — and we do not mean weeks or months.

The previous project, Return To Planet Underground, was a mixture of a modern-day backdrop of the underground music scene with a story from scripture and colonization. The difference was portrayed within a seemingly social society, but in the lower levels of society one could argue something different.

Visiting our grandparents in Bremen, Germany, gave us a connection to German things at a young age. Our grandfather had remarried and his wife only spoke German, so we learned to understand it early. Later in life, like most electronic musicians, we got influenced by Kraftwerk and later by the German techno scene. Our sound has always been influenced by Germany.

We got an idea when we had some time off: re-doing the music of Metropolis. At that time we had not yet seen the movie. When we saw it for the first time we realized its theme had parallels with our previous movie project, and we decided to execute the idea. The theme of the underground and the higher level of society appealed to us, but we thought the original had to be changed a bit to fit the current zeitgeist.

That meant not only re-doing the music, but also the story, the editing and the framing. We thought the original was too long, and the text took you a bit out of the flow of the movie. Both elements had to be adjusted to turn this groundbreaking masterpiece into a new modern classic.
